JPG, PNG, and WebP: Which Format to Use (and Convert Free)
Choosing the wrong format wastes bandwidth or breaks transparency. This guide explains when photographers should use JPG, PNG, or WebP—and how to convert between them in the browser without uploading client files. JPG — default for photos
JPG (JPEG) handles continuous tone well and stays compatible everywhere. Use it for portraits, events, and most social posts. It cannot store transparency; exporting a transparent PNG to JPG fills the background (usually white). Re-saving JPG many times stacks generation loss, so convert from a high-quality master when possible instead of ping-ponging the same file.
PNG — logos, cutouts, sharp edges
PNG keeps alpha channels and crisp text. File sizes grow quickly for photos. Ideal after background removal when you need a transparent subject for invitations, product composites, or marketing layouts. Avoid PNG as your default delivery format for full wedding galleries—the downloads will frustrate guests.
WebP — modern web performance
WebP often beats JPG on size at similar quality and can keep transparency. Support is strong in current browsers. Some older print labs and portals still want JPG—convert when the destination requires it. For a photography portfolio website, WebP (or modern responsive images) helps pages feel snappy without looking soft.

- Client proof on WhatsApp: JPG.
- Logo or sticker with clear background: PNG or WebP with alpha.
- Website grid / blog hero: WebP if the stack supports it; otherwise optimized JPG.
- Government or HR portal: whatever the form lists—usually JPG—then hit KB limits with Compress to KB.

Will conversion fix a blurry photo?
No. Format changes encoding, not focus. Soft images stay soft.
CMS and email quirks
Some newsletter tools strip WebP. Some builders accept WebP in the media library but serve broken images on older corporate browsers. When a client’s IT team still runs locked-down Edge policies, keep a JPG fallback. Conversely, modern headless CMS setups often prefer WebP or AVIF pipelines—convert only as far as your hosting stack is ready.
Email signatures are especially picky: stick to small JPGs. Animated or transparent needs belong in the website, not the footer of every outbound message.
